So I was having a very very hard time getting back into surfing competition shape. VERY hard. First I could not even catch waves any more. Next when I was able to catch the waves I was not able to pop up any more.

 

I was telling a mate of mine at the pub about it and he slapped me on the head and said M8! you gotta start surfing with your heart and not your head!

What I did was went back to basics and used my heart:

 

1. I started surfing with one of those foam top surf techs. The biggest one I could find.

 

2. Once I got back into catching waves then I started surfing with the biggest longboard I could find.

 

3. Then I started watching the following videos below and started to focus on the following:

a) keeping my hands under my chest when I pop up.

b) practicing popups on the beach before I paddle out.

c) NOT holding onto the rails.

d) looking up and forward, not down at my hands.

e) going to my tip toes before popping up.

 

Now I am still not back into competitive shape BUT I have turned the corner.
